Christian Music Christian Music
Christian music is a broad topic, and there are many opinions about it. Because
of the emotional content of music, the culture in which we grew up and were
exposed to, etc., tastes in music can vary quite a bit from one to another.
In my case, I try to remain open. Yet, in my opinion, sacred music in the classical
form, at least some of it, is the highest expression of the musical arts, and
demonstrates a lasting value, a refinement, a cultural achievement, that
contemporary, popular music cannot be compared to. Yet, some popular music
also displays talent, and insights, that cannot be denied. In my opinion,
the sanctus of Berlioz' Requiem, or the Hallelujah chorus of Handel's Messiah,
and similar works, represent the highest achiement of the musical arts, and can,
by those who can appreciate them, enable and encourage true worship.
Yet, also, some contemporary musicians who write and record their own Christian
songs can give expression to their own personal worship and praise.
Berlioz' Requiem
Here is a youtube link to a video/audio performance of Berlioz' Requiem,
conducted by Sir Colin Davis. This performance is the entire Requiem, lasting
over an hour and a half. Sir Colin Davis has been conducting performances of
Berlioz' Requiem for over forty years. His 1970 recording may be his best, a copy
of which I have owned on vinyl for over thirty years. I recently purchased this same
performance reissued by Pentatone in multi-format (standard CD, super audio CD (SACD),
and in five-channel surround sound). The fact that it has been reissued
in modern formats some forty three years after its recording speaks well for
its perceived quality and significance.

Creation. This performance is the entire The Creation, lasting over an hour
and 45 minutes. The video and the audio quality are very good for a youtube
performance.
